Team Members

BJ’s Wholesale Club has more than 30,000 team members across the Eastern United States. We’re proud of the opportunities we offer our team members. Approximately 40% of our club general managers began their careers at BJ’s as hourly team members, and more than 65% of our general managers have been promoted from within the company.

BJ’s Open Door Policy encourages team members to try to resolve any problems at work with their immediate supervisors. If a team member is unsatisfied with the immediate supervisor’s response, the team member may take the problem to the next level of management. BJ’s Open Door Policy also provides that team members may contact BJ’s Office of Open Door Solutions for advice or assistance at any time.

Inclusion and Diversity

BJ’s Wholesale Club is committed to advancing a culture in which all voices are heard, all backgrounds and experiences are celebrated, and all team members can thrive. This inclusive culture is inherent to our values and success as a company. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made in this area but we recognize that there is still more to be done.

BJ’s has been unwavering in its stance against racism and discrimination in all forms and the social injustice we witnessed in 2020 further reinforced our commitment. We issued a public statement in June 2020 reiterating that we stand in solidarity against racism, discrimination and violence. In addition, we are proud to serve an incredibly diverse membership base and work alongside a diverse population of team members. To help further our efforts, we created an Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) Council, which is sponsored by various members of our leadership team and consists of team members with diverse backgrounds and experiences from every part of our business. The council’s core objectives are to embrace our diverse team members, members and communities, and to cultivate an inclusive culture where all team members are valued, can develop to their full potential, and fully contribute to the success of the company. Additionally, the council works closely with the senior leadership team to drive inclusion and diversity at BJ’s through various initiatives. In 2020, we donated $300,000 from the BJ’s Charitable Foundation to organizations focused on advancing inclusion and diversity, including YearUp and Out & Equal.

The leadership team and board of directors are committed to this work, which we believe is inherent to our values and our success as a company. We will continue to provide updates on our efforts as we make progress through the sustainability site.

Team Member Resource Groups

We have a multi-year partnership with the Network of Executive Women (NEW), and we encourage and sponsor team members to take part in NEW’s development programs, leadership training and other offerings. Our team member Resource Groups (TMRGs) offer team members a platform for educational opportunities, professional development and cross-department relationships and collaboration. TMRGs also offer team members opportunities to represent BJ’s in the diverse communities that our clubs and Home Office serve. BJ’s TMRGs include:


The Women’s Forum

Our Women's Forum is our largest group, with a mission to create and cultivate a strong internal network to allow for personal and professional growth and development. We believe this will help participants advance in their career. The group offers workshops, webinars and live events to support these goals in partnership with NEW.

Pride at BJ’s

Pride at BJ’s exists as a platform to connect our LGBTQIA community and allies, advocate for and promote BJ's core values and create opportunities for professional development, networking and community service. This group sponsors local Pride events across BJ’s footprint and attends diversity and inclusion events to network, stay current and align our initiatives with the needs of the community.

Citizens of the World

Our Citizens of the World group brings people together one person at a time by promoting diversity and embracing cultural differences. They celebrate a wide variety of cultural holidays and host events to discuss diversity in the workplace.

Young Professionals

Our Young Professionals group strives to establish open professional relationships between younger team members and senior leaders of the company to assist in the development of BJ’s future leaders. The group hosts strategic business competitions and speaking engagements for team members of all levels.

Working Parents

Our Working Parents group provides parents with a place to gain advice and to discover resources needed to seek a positive work/life balance. The group hosts events to bring together a dedicated group of working and expecting moms and dads, so that team members can share ideas and provide support to one another.

Veterans

Our Veterans group seeks to connect Team Members who have served our country as members of the armed forces and to recognize their contributions. The group hosts events to bring together veterans across the company and offer networking and professional development opportunities.

Compensation and Benefits

BJ’s Wholesale Club is committed to offering our team members competitive wages and comprehensive benefits. The majority of our workforce is comprised of hourly team members and our starting hourly pay is above minimum wage. We also pay for experience. We value our team members’ future and want to invest in it, which is why we also offer a variety of company-sponsored retirement plans and a 401(k) match.

Our generous benefits package includes affordable healthcare plans with access to high-quality medical and dental coverage for our team members. Additionally, we offer a Team Member Discount program with exclusive savings at BJ’s Optical for all team members to access affordable eyeglass frames, lenses and contact lenses.

We believe it’s important for parents to have time to care for and bond with a new child, and we offer a parental leave benefit that is among the best in the industry. This benefit underscores our commitment to offering a strong compensation and benefits package to our team members.

We're also committed to supporting team members facing hardship. Our employee relief program, called Aisle Help, is designed to provide financial support to full- and part-time team members in need. Over the years, Aisle Help has assisted hundreds of team members during natural disasters, illnesses and deaths of loved ones. Aisle Help is wholly funded through generous donations from team members.

Professional Development and Career Opportunities

BJ’s is committed to providing career growth and professional development opportunities to all team members. In fiscal year 2019, over 10% of all team members were promoted and we continue to recognize team members with competitive wages and an annual incentive program.

Additionally, in fiscal year 2019, we launched an enhanced suite of learning and development programs, including CorpU, PlayerLync and our New Club Training Program, dedicated to support our field team members.

CorpU is a collaborative and social learning experience for field leaders to facilitate learning with renowned leadership experts.

We are also piloting PlayerLync, a mobile platform to give team members access to training and resources in the club.

Lastly, we created and redefined a New Club Training Program that includes over 100 different classes and a New Leader Program.
